March for Meals #SaveLunch

After 21 years of commemorating March for Meals, the annual advocacy campaign honoring the amendment of the Older Americans Act of 1965 to incorporate nutrition programs in 1972, Meals on Wheels Durham is joining Meals on Wheels America to focus this March's advocacy on #SaveLunch!

#SaveLunch

#SaveLunch is a nationwide campaign led by Meals on Wheels America designed to rally communities around our senior neighbors and protect the essential services that enable so many to remain healthy and independent at home. Meals on Wheels funding is at risk, and we need your help to #SaveLunch for America’s seniors!

As our senior population grows, so does senior hunger, malnutrition, and isolation and loneliness. In the last year, Meals on Wheels Durham has experienced a 125% increase in the demand for our services in Durham County—we currently have a waiting list of 518 seniors.

Join team #SaveLunch and help us raise awareness for senior nutrition programs. Volunteer to deliver meals or make wellness calls, urge Congress to #SaveLunch for seniors, or join us for Champions Week (March 18-22) where we'll be hosting local officials at MOWD. Additionally, don't miss out on our Duck Donuts Fundraiser and the Durham CROP Hunger Walk.

Our Duck Donuts Fundraiser will run from March 18 - 22 at the Duck Donuts at Patterson Place in Durham (5320 McFarland Rd. Durham, NC, 27707). For every Durham Dozen purchased, $8 will be allocated directly to MOWD, covering the cost of one meal.

Why the Month of March?

National #SaveLunch efforts in March will commemorate the historic day in March of 1972 when the Older Americans Act was amended to include a nutrition program for Americans 60 years and older. More than 50 years later, 12 million older Americans are still threatened by or experience hunger, and one in three seniors feels lonely. That is why Meals on Wheels programs from across the country are joining forces to raise awareness and support to ensure we can continue to address food insecurity and malnutrition, combat social isolation, enable independence and improve health for decades to come.
