Nia Richardson joined Meals on Wheels Durham in the summer of 2021, bringing her expertise as a communications and events professional who believes deeply in the power of storytelling to drive connection and impact. Since then, she has served as Communications and Special Events Coordinator, where she enhanced brand awareness and engagement across all platforms and successfully executed three 200+ guest galas and a virtual fundraising event—collectively generating thousands of dollars to support Meals on Wheels Durham’s mission.

In her new role as Director of Communications and Community Engagement, Nia oversees strategic communications, community partnerships, and engagement initiatives that strengthen connections across Durham County. She is passionate about amplifying the voices of older adults, volunteers, and supporters, and about promoting the organization’s mission of nourishing both body and spirit through meals and meaningful relationships.

A summa cum laude graduate of The University of Alabama, Nia earned her bachelor’s degree in 2015 and completed her master’s degree shortly after. She launched her career in athletic communications at Appalachian State University and her alma mater before transitioning into higher education, where she served as Assistant Director of Communications and Events at Birmingham-Southern College.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Nia is a proud former Division I student-athlete, having competed as a thrower on the Crimson Tide Track and Field Team from 2012 to 2015. A two-time Capital One Academic All-American, she credits athletics with shaping her resilience, discipline, and commitment to teamwork—qualities she now brings to her leadership at Meals on Wheels Durham.

Outside of work, Nia enjoys spending time with her family and daughter. She is passionate about all things sports, loves exploring new foods, has a deep appreciation for music, and enjoys diving into documentaries that broaden her perspective and spark meaningful conversation.
