Spring 2020 Internship Opportunity

Meals on Wheels Durham is seeking an undergraduate or graduate student who is interested in development and communications in the nonprofit sector. Recent graduates may also apply. The Development and Communications intern will be an integral part of the team, helping to further the mission and feed the need in Durham. The intern will have the opportunity to build a robust portfolio in the areas of development and communications including but not limited to fundraising, grant writing, event planning, social media, and web page design. The Development and Communications intern will support and report to the Director of Development and Communications.

Meals on Wheels Durham is a non-profit agency committed to enhancing the quality of life for

eligible homebound adults in our community.

Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for seniors, peoples with disabilities, and other eligible community members who are unable to provide proper nutrition for themselves by delivering meals, offering personal interactions, and providing other complementary services. Dedicated volunteers deliver lunches to our clients each weekday, with the objective of improving the health of each individual. It is our goal that the combination of nutritious meals and social interaction will help our clients remain independent and allow them to age gracefully in their homes.

 

Internship Position Description

Meals on Wheels Durham is seeking an undergraduate or graduate student who is interested in development and communications in the nonprofit sector. Recent graduates may also apply. The Development and Communications intern will be an integral part of the team, helping to further the mission and feed the need in Durham. The intern will have the opportunity to build a robust portfolio in the areas of development and communications including but not limited to fundraising, grant writing, event planning, social media, and web page design. The Development and Communications intern will support and report to the Director of Development and Communications.

 

  • Roles and Responsibilities
  • Ensure timely execution of all tasks, including but not limited to fundraising and sponsorship research and analysis, database clean up and maintenance, social media posts, blog posts, weekly newsletters, website updates, etc.
  • Assist with capturing content including pictures, videos, quotes, and stories.
  • Attend and support fundraising events for Meals on Wheels Durham including the 3rd Annual Feed the Need Gala on 2/22/20 at The Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club.
  • Implement the timely execution of all campaigns, including tasks such as creating and editing mailing lists.
  • Actively utilize software and platforms such as MS Office (PowerPoint, Publisher, Word, Excel), volunteer management systems, and a donor database to execute tasks.
  • Complete other assigned duties and projects as needed.   

 

  • Skills/Abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication as evidenced by creative writing samples
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of staff members, clients, volunteers and community leaders
  • Experience and comfort with utilizing technology including databases, design websites, and social media platforms
  • Ability to meet deadlines with special attention to detail
  • Creative thinking skills and vision
  • Passion for learning and taking on new challenges

 

  • Schedule:  Starting in January 2020, the intern will work 10-15 hours a week for 10 weeks Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:30am-4:00pm. There will be 1-4 required Saturdays including the Feed the Need Gala on 2/22/20. The start date and amount of hours will be determined based on the intern’s schedule.

 

  • Compensation: A small stipend will be given to the intern at the completion of the ten-week program. Although our internship program is unpaid, interns are encouraged to seek academic credit for the internship. Student is responsible for making such arrangements and should determine the specific procedure at her/his academic institution.
